Dear professor

I am taking system modeling class, and I have problem with my assignment because of M1 macbook.

I was told to access to VM to import file from using SSH, SCP, and terminal, but it did not work. (I attached 2 screenshots, and I hope it works)screenshot1! screenshot2
I have three question

  1. Are IP address and username right?
From information in circle, I thought IP address of my VM is [10.9.0.223] and username is [cloud]. Are they right? If they are wrong, cloud you please tell me how to find IP address and username of the VM?

  2. if IP address and username are right, why I cannot access to the VM from SSH?
When I tried, the terminal says "ssh: connect to host 10.9.0.223 port 22: Operation timed out". Could you please tell me how can I access to the VM?

  3. Is it possible to borrow laptop in the university?
I feel scary that doing the assignment with my laptop takes a lot of time.
Since I have other study too, I cannot use all of my time for just setting up my laptop.
I'm afraid to ask this, but is it possible to borrow university's laptop for doing my assignment?

Thank you for your help in advance.

Sincerely yours,
Ai Yoshida

Dear Ai Yoshida,

There are several simple solutions to copy the initial project of your homework to the VM in the cloud while using an RDP client.

  • Use a browser in the cloud VM itself to log in to Homework Portal and download your homework.
  • Copy the file from your MacBook to the VM in the cloud using Microsoft Remote Desktop by following relevant guides about clipboard, e.g. this.
  • Share a subfolder of your MacBook with the VM in the cloud (guide). You will see the shared folder in /home/cloud/thinclient_drives in the VM.

There is no SSH server installed in the VM, therefore I suggest you to try the options above.
(Yes, I see the screenshots.)

  1. The username is correct, the IP address is not since it is a private IPv4 address used inside the cloud internally.
  2. There is no SSH server installed in the VM. If you still want to, you can do it yourself like this. To access port 22 from your computer (which is outside the cloud) open the port on the Network tab (screenshot 2) and access via vm.fured.cloud.bme.hu:<generated port number> (see NAT).
  3. Unfortunately, we do not have extra laptops for this purpose. However you can use the desktop computers in the Student Computer Center (HSZK for short, building R, 4th floor) when they are not reserved for other courses (schedule). If you want to use the downloadable VM there, choose room L or M where VMware program is installed (installed programs in each room).

Thank you for your rely. I have more two questions regarding to that.
>>Use a browser in the cloud VM itself to log in to Homework Portal and download your homework.

Could you please tell me how can I access to the homework portal from VM? I cloud not find application where I can access it(like chrome or safari).

>>However you can use the desktop computers in the Student Computer Center (HSZK for short, building R, 4th floor) when they are not reserved for other courses (schedule).

Do I need to reserve before I use the computer? I think classroom is locked when it is not used as a lecture.

Thank you for your support.

Firefox browser is installed on the VM.

I think you do not need a reservation for SCC computers. For further details check their website or contact them. https://hszk-bme-hu.translate.goog/elerhetoseg.html?_x_tr_sl=hu&_x_tr_tl=en
The rooms with projectors are locked outside of scheduled courses. See the opening hours. https://hszk-bme-hu.translate.goog/nyitva.html?_x_tr_sl=hu&_x_tr_tl=en

Thank you for your answer.

I found the firebox in in VM, but it does not work.
Could you pls tell me the reason?
"Firebox is already running, but it is not responding. To open window, you must first close the existing Firebox process, or restart your system"(since I cannot upload photo in comment, so I add the screenshot to the main question above.)

Whenever I try to open firebox, it shows that sentence. And I do not try to open other application like the system says.

Thank you for your help in advance.

I could not reproduce the issue on my VM.
If you do not have any valuable data on the VM, I suggest you to destroy the VM (red X at the top-right corner) and start a new one.

P.S. It is enough to copy the link of the screenshot to the comment text.
